| SELECTING SPARTACUS SELECTS
WHAT IS "SELECTS"
SOCCER?
"Selects" soccer is a player-development bridge from recreational
to competitive or "Rep" soccer. Each season, the founding
members of the next year-class are selected and invited to our Soccer
School program. Starting out at Under-7, each class emerges as a
full Spartacus Rep team at Under 10.
WHO PICKS THE "SELECTS"?
Coaches, and only coaches. The process begins with our House League
coaches. All are experienced players, many of whom came through
the local youth soccer system themselves, from toddlers to teens.
They know what the Selects coaches are looking for, and inform the
Club Head Coach about any youngsters they feel have potential. Each
recommended player is then observed by the senior coaches at least
twice in games. If our House League coaches are right, and they
usually are, the player is invited to attend Selects practices.
If player and program seem like a good fit, they are then invited
to join the Selects.
HOW ARE THEY SELECTED?
The House League coaches observe their players for the first half
of the season. At the midpoint, they are asked for their recommendations.
They identify the players who show the best "soccer personality".
Besides normal athleticism, they look for kids who show energy,
enthusiasm, physical confidence, effort, a love of playing... in
short, the youngsters who quickly take to the game. We continue
the scouting process throughout players' House League "career".
Players who are not selected at the youngest ages can still be invited
to move to Rep soccer in following years, as they develop.
WHEN DOES SELECTS BEGIN?
For each new year-class, Soccer School begins in the winter at the
end of their Under-7 year. However, players who are identified as
potential Selects are invited to practice with the next oldest class
until their own class begins.
